Combined Lactate Threshold & VO₂ Max Test (Bike)
The combined Lactate Threshold and VO₂ Max assessment is the most comprehensive physiological test to provide guidance for your training and performance. By measuring how your body responds to increasing intensity, Elevate removes the guesswork from your training, allowing you to train with greater precision using enhanced data and individualised report feedback.
What to Expect During Your Assessment
During this 90-minute session, you will complete multiple stages of cycling at incrementally increasing power.
You will need to bring your own bike to the assessment. Your bike will be set up and connected to a Wahoo KICKR for the test, allowing you to ride on your own bike and replicate your normal riding position and setup.
Throughout the test, your breathing is measured via metabolic gas analysis to track oxygen consumption. At the end of each stage, a small, sterile pinprick blood sample is taken from your earlobe or finger to measure lactate accumulation.
The protocol progresses through your lactate threshold (LT1 / aerobic threshold) and lactate turnpoint (LT2 / anaerobic threshold), concluding when you reach your maximal oxygen uptake (VO₂ max). This allows us to build a complete picture of your physiological profile across increasing power and individualise your training intensity zones.
What This Assessment Gives You
This assessment provides a complete blueprint of your current fitness and physiological capacity. Your results include:
Full Lactate and Heart Rate Profile: Pinpoint exactly how your body responds to different intensities.
Maximal Oxygen Uptake (VO₂ max): Discover your cardiorespiratory capacity and aerobic fitness.
Power at VO₂ Max (pVO₂ max): Understand the functional performance aspect that relates your VO₂ max to cycling performance.
Precision Training Zones: Get definitive, lactate-anchored power zones based on your unique physiological responses, rather than generic estimates.
Energy Efficiency: Measure how efficiently you use oxygen to produce power.
Fuel Utilisation (Fat & Carbohydrate Oxidation): Understand your energy expenditure and how you utilise different fuel sources to help optimise race-day nutrition and metabolic efficiency.
Sub-maximal Oxygen Responses: Gain insight into your aerobic base, exercise economy and endurance characteristics.
Personalised Reporting and Scientific Strategy
Following your session at Hustle Wymondham, you will receive an individualised summary report within 48 hours. Every report is bespoke, based on your specific physiological responses and your primary performance goals.
Before and after the test, we will have a brief discussion to ensure your results are properly contextualised to your sport, training and goals. You will also have the opportunity to discuss your report and results after you have had time to digest the information.
